Surround Yourself With People You can Learn From, People Who are Kind, and People Who Do Kind Things.

debbiedowner

We’ve talked about it before…life is short and its way too short to surround yourself with toxic relationships that are adding nothing but stress and anxiety to your daily mental outlook. Our goal is to provide you with the resources to help you surround yourself with positive people, places, and experiences that keep you moving forward! Life. It’s a State of Mind.

So, it’s time to do a little Spring cleaning in the relationship department!

First Step: How do you spot a toxic relationship?

Does this sound familiar?

1) When you make a significant accomplishment in your life like getting that fab new job you’ve been working so hard for, or finally being able to take that dream vacation, opening a new business venture, or buying a new home, does your “friend” make a snide remark like “must be nice!” (in which you reply in your head..”why yes bitch it is!” Just kidding. No we aren’t)

2) When you share your thoughts about a life goal or dream you have for yourself does your “friend” insist on shooting it down immediately instead of encouraging you to move forward, explore, or entertain the idea?

3) Do you notice that the majority of your conversations with said “friend” are always about negative gossip or what other people are doing in a judgmental tone?

Well, if you answered “yes” to one or all of these questions it might be a good time to take a look at the relationship and answer a few very important questions:

-       What am I learning from this person?

-       Is this person a supporter of mine?

-       Is this person kind? What acts of kindness do you notice in their day to day interactions with others?

If you are drawing a blank, or making excuses for trying to answer the above questions for a particular “friend”, it might be time to distance the relationship.

Step 2: How To Distance the Relationship:

A good start is to begin by putting more of a focus into the relationships you have with the people who you know are in your corner, supportive, and positive influences in your life. Remember that relationships, when healthy and supportive, are worth the time and energy you put into them, and give them the time that they deserve.

As for the relationships you have determined to be “toxic”, you can decide whether you want to keep sending them holiday cards and maintain a friendly rapport when you see them by chance, or if you want to make a clean break. But don’t allow them to continue to add stress and negativity to your life. Reserve your energy for those who had real power and value to your life.

Ok, right about now we know that you might be circling back to a few names on your “toxic relationship” list that might be family members, co-workers, or people who are for some other reason difficult to avoid. “What do I do then”, you ask?

Sometimes you just have no control over this group, and its important to learn easy ways to deal with those difficult relationships that can help you deal with them and reduce the stress they can bring to your life. This can be a little more tricky…so we put a short list of resourceful links to help you deal if you need them.

Quick Tips: How To Deal With Difficult People

Remember, you are in control of who you allow to share your space in this world. Life is short. Surround yourself with people who do nothing but make you feel your best!

Luck-1

We are all guilty of it. How many times have you said this statement, ”She’s so lucky!” Sound like a familiar exclamation you’ve made about some “lucky” lady you admire? You wish you had her “luck” in love, business, or life in general. Well, be envious no more! Luck Be A Lady, and we are going to give you the tips to help you start making your own "Luck" today!

What if we were to tell you that LUCK is not something that happens to you, but more of a series of prepared events that you create to consistently occur over a course of a lifetime? Still not convinced? Well, let us break it down for you, because its truly as simple as this… Luck can be created.

If you spend your whole life waiting for "LUCK" to find you, you will perhaps spend your whole life just waiting.

8 Tips to help you "Get Lucky!"

(no get your mind out of the gutter..thats an entirley different article for another time..but nice thinking)

1) Put yourself at the right place at the right times. Whether it is success in love, business, or some greater life accomplishment you are seeking, you are not going to make it happen by sitting on your couch waiting for the magic knock on the door. Let me tell you a little story about my own experience with LUCK. In fact, my “Luck” is allowing me the opportunity to help you find yours today. I’m a testament to LUCK..I live my life by it. To Me Luck is Laboring Under Correct Knowledge.

What does that mean exactly, you ask? Surrounding yourself with positive people doing positive things, soaking up the knowledge on a particular area of life you are interested in, attending the right events or occasions that add to your betterment of interests, being good to others…you see where we are going here. LifeSushi was born out of luck and here we are today, paying it forward to you at this very moment. Without getting too far ahead of ourselves, lets move along to #2.

2) Get Uncomfortable & Learn Where the Opportunities Lie. Try getting yourself into a mentality of “have no fear” when following your ambitions. It’s all a state of mind, and it can be conditioned. It will take a little work on your part. Intentionally do things that make you uncomfortable. Get up and sing during a karaoke party. Ask a random guy on a date. Get off Facebook and do some research on your competition if you’re feeling lazy. Train yourself to always be looking for the next opportunity, your next challenge for growth, because that mindset is exactly what allows you to create LUCK!

3) Be a Good Person. Creating Good Karma is just like creating good luck. Remember kind gestures and loyalty do come back around. So be kind. You never know who you are talking to or what someone is going through in their own life, so BE kind.

4) Be Humble. You’ve probably heard this one. You can create more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.

5) Be generous. Never lose the spirit of generosity! Become a mentor to others, simply saying or sending more “thank-yous,” and doing more things without over-thinking the potential “what’s in it for me” equation is a pay-it-forward attitude that in the long-run usually pays off ten fold. Plus, the feel good factor is a health benefit in itself. Its true..when you feel good, your body benefits.

6) Trust Your Gut. I think this tip is best represented by a story of quite possibly one of the “luckiest” men in history. The late Apple Founder/CEO, Steve Jobs described in a famous speech he gave to the graduating class at Stanford University, why trusting in your gut instincts may be the best way to ensure your luck in the future. He said, "You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something—your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life." So what are you waiting for again? There's never going to be a right time to go after your dreams. Don’t be afraid of the unknown. Go confidently in the direction of your dreams, and see how quick your LUCK changes.

If you have never had the pleasure of watching Steve Jobs famousStandford address. Set aside 20minutes of your life to truly be inspired.

7) BELIEVE! Simply believing you are lucky can create positive outcomes. Lucky people are more relaxed and open, and therefore see what is there, rather than just what they are looking for. It's a state of mind to be lucky. Believe!

8) Expect Good Fortune. The lucky expect good things to happen, and amazingly they do. The power of positive thinking…are you seeing a theme here? Put your mind in a lucky state and see what happens. You deserve all the good Luck coming your way!

So by now you must be feeling LUCKY right? What are you waiting for? No, we don’t mean hop on the red eye to Vegas, (but we’re in if that’s where you are headed).

If you have some great stories on how Luck has found you through your way of living the good life…share them with us! We love to hear your tales and we'll share them back with the LifeSushi community... “pay it forward.” You never know who you will inspire just by simply sharing your story of how LUCK found you.

With the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games just days away, you can rest assured that the competing athletes are putting the finishing touches on their training and preparation for their big moment in the spotlight.

These elite athletes train for years not just perfecting their physical abilities in their respective sport, but also on the discipline that comes along with their mental game. This group of highly skilled competitors know better than any other group of people on the planet, that the biggest competitive challenge will come in the form of the mental game.  They know that the biggest difference between going home with or without a medal could all just lie in their STATE OF MIND at the time of competition. Like we always remind you at LifeSushi, it’s a State of Mind and you are always just a short mental lane change to living the best life you can!

So, today, we want to give you a few tips, that these athletes religiously practice, to help get you to the top of their Mental Game in Life!

 1) Stay Motivated – Olympians have a never give up attitude. They are highly motivated individuals and are following a passion. What’s your life passion? Have you thought about it? If you were doing something in life that you really loved wouldn’t you clap your hands every morning when you woke up and said, “I’m ready to do this!” as you whistle your way out of the door? Find out what gets you motivated. There is no better way to stay motivated than doing something you LOVE!

 2) Be Optimistic – These Olympic athletes did not magically appear at the Olympic games. They trained for years in their respective sport and lost and failed more times than they probably wish to share. What has separated theses individuals from the heap, was an optimistic attitude that if they just kept trying and kept moving, they would succeed. So, remember, its all about the journey so “keep on keepin on.” Maintain a “glass half full” attitude and you too can be on your way to success in life!

 3) Get Tough – Olympians have mental toughness. They believe in themselves above everything else, which helps to keep them motivated and optimistic. You see where we are going with this stuff? It’s all related. Olympians make goals that coincide with their skills. Find out what you are good at and work at it. It will build your confidence to do great things.

 4) Use positive influences to help achieve your standard of perfection! You might need to read that sentence twice. Surround yourself with positive influences to guide you along to achieving an ultimate life goal. Olympians do! They use their influences to guide them and critique them into being the best they can be. Ask yourself…who are your positive influences? Are you being dragged down by toxic friends or "Debbie downers?" It might be time to clean that closet of friendship.

5) Focus. Focus. Focus.  Olympians have the ability to key into what is important and complete the task at hand… so do you.  They focus on what they can control and key in on that to find a solution to their problem. Ask yourself this, when a problem arises in your life do you automatically start thinking about all the bad things that are about to come from the problem or do you immediately start thinking about “connecting the dots” to solve the problem as best as you can.  So, start thinking like an Olympian and look at the resources around you to solve the problem at hand. You can do it! All it takes is a little focus.

6) Control the “Controllable” – Olympians have the ability to plan ahead and diminish those extra life stresses that might possibly arise along their path. Look ahead at potential obstacles and set safety nets before they become an issue. Think of it like insurance…you have car insurance to help lessen the burden should a car accident arise. What else do you need to insure so you can rest easy that you are taken care of should a “speed bump” arise along the road of life?

By applying these simple tips to help you think like an Olympian, you can be on your way to winning the GOLD in your life! (yes, we know that was a cheesy line, but it just came out so easy! HA!) Ok, Go Get em!

Paying It Forward in the New Year!

 BeKind2013

Ok..so by now the flood of new year’s resolution posts, emails, and tweets have flooded all of your accounts over the last week. This is why we decided to let all that noise fizzle down just a bit before we dive into the new year. We always like to take a week to reflect on the year past between new year’s day and the next official week of the new year.  We ask ourselves what could we have done better? What do we want to accomplish? What would we like to change?

Resolutions are great, but what’s even better is sitting down and just coming up with a few simple goals and action items on how you are actually going to achieve those goals. That’s the sticky factor…the map for which you will achieve your goal. So, as you get started on your blueprint for a happy, healthy, and successful new year, we would like to challenge you to add another “goal” to your list of yearly accomplishments.

My goal for this year is to “give back” a little bit more. When I say “give back” I don’t mean in a strictly monetary way. I’ve been very blessed in my life, with my health, my family, my success in career and business. The one area of my life where I continue to feel a void is in the way of giving back. I am committed in the New Year  to give back more of myself by the way of educating others and random acts of goodwill. After all, it does make the world a better place when you spread a little sunshine in another direction. You never know who you will inspire to live a better life with just the smallest act of help.

So, our challenge to you this year is really quite simple when you put it down on paper, but can quickly turn into a challenge when you try to incorporate it into your daily list of growing action items. We, at Life Sushi, simply challenge you to “Pay It Forward” in the New Year by being a positive source of inspiration, goodwill, and motivation for those you surround yourself with. Sounds simple right? Not so fast…you will have to make a conscious effort to remember to do this month in and month out for it to really begin to be a 2nd nature part of life for you.

So, here’s your blueprint for the 2013 Pay It Forward Challenge….

-    Once a month complete a random act of kindness through a charitable act. Now, just because we use the word “charitable” doesn’t translate that you have to give money to someone or something. A charitable act can be anything that might be helpful to someone or some cause in need. It can be simply an investment of your time. Visiting the elderly. Teaching a child. Picking up the phone and calling a friend or loved one going through a rough time. Writing a letter…yes an actual paper signed, sealed, and delivered letter. Ask yourself when the last time you did that?

Keep a calendar reminder set for each month to help you remember. That’s only 12 charitable acts you are committing to for the year…before you know you’ll be doing one a week and inspiring others to do the same.

Make it Infectious! If you use Twitter…Tweet about your “Pay It Forward” moment each month and use the hashtag #BeKind2013 so others can follow along. Being kind is contagious! You can follow along with us each month at @LifeSushi

Not quite sure how to get started? Here’s another inspiring twitter account you can follow. We were inspired this past month by Ann Curry’s announcement to ask her network of followers to remember the fallen 26 of Newtown, CT by creating a twitter movement called #26acts. 26 Acts of Kindness to remember the fallen 26.  Go check out the number of people who were inspired to commit an act of kindness and continue to pay it forward. You can follow Ann Curry’s Twitter page and posts from followers here https://twitter.com/AnnCurry

So, let’s keep the positive acts flowing & growing this new year!

All you have left to ask yourself is… Today, I will Pay It Forward by?

Happy New Year!

“There comes a time in every woman's life when the only thing that helps is a glass of champagne.” ~Bette Davis

You know those days where you just can’t get your head screwed on straight? There’s something wrong and you just can’t put your finger on it? You are anxious, full of worry and just have no clue as to why! Well, sometimes its hormones (you have your gender to thank for that, sorry), and sometimes its just our mind wandering in directions for reasons we cant explain.

When days like this hit, I always tell myself “ok crazy lady, its time for a mental lane change!”

I start by trying to change my routine for the day.  Sometimes all we need is a little change in our normal daily routine to actually knock our minds back on track and stop thinking like a lunatic. Here are some of the things that usually do the trick for me:

Work It Out! Get a workout in! Even if its just a 20 or 30 minute run! Mind and body are connected. When you exercise you release lots of  “feel good” endorphins! Blast some of your favorite tunes while you are at it. Need some musical inspiration, check out our Moment of Zen section for some new tracks. Remember, our body’s natural medicine is always the best!

Call a friend that makes you laugh! have my speed dial loaded with my friends that make me laugh…sometimes all I need is a 5 minute phone call to someone that just puts a smile on my face. Like we always say, surround yourself with positive people doing positive things and it’s amazing how your life can change in both the smallest and most meaningful ways.

Short story for ya….one day a friend of mine called me in the middle of the week right in the middle of the day and she was crying.  Like a good friend I asked, “What on earth is wrong?” “What happened?” To which she replied, in a sobbing voice,  “I don’t know and nothing happened. I am just driving around in my car crying!” To which I laughed and said, “Well something must be wrong?” Well, after talking for a few minutes the conversation quickly turned to a laugh between two friends and we hung up after a few short minutes later. When I called the next day to check up on her, I again asked, “Are you okay?” “Did something happen?” She replies “Oh no, I’m fine now. I think its that time of the month…thats all!”

Again, you can see where sometimes there really is NOTHING wrong, but just our minds playing tricks on us.  So, pick up the phone and call a friend who makes you smile! Most likely they can slap ya back into a positive state and you can tell yourself that you ARE in control and ARE not crazy! “Bless Your Heart”

Read, Watch, Explore! Sometimes it’s just enough to read an inspiring article, or watch a funny video to get your mind back on track.

We are going to do our best each week to arm you with as much positive re-enforcement we can provide and you can handle. Need a laugh…check out our Motormouth section or click the Daily LOL. There’s always some meaningless video clip or time wasting read you can find there, just the perfect fix for your moment of unstableness. Or find inspiration here in “What’s In The Cabeza” and tell us what’s going on in your cabeza today. We love hearing from you and love to help! Just comment below and we’ll do our best to get your head back in the game!

If all else fails…go to sleep or have a drink! Just kidding but not really!

Cheers to finding your Mental Lane Changer!
